Abstract

The rise to success of Georges Duroy, the Bel-Ami of Guy de Maupassant’s novel, benefitted from the charm he exerted on the protagonists of social life in late nineteenth-century Paris. The rise to success of Steve Jobs, from the computer made in his parents’ garage to the reclaiming of the CEO position at Apple, is the result of great inventiveness, a talent for the development of new technologies. Different the context, different the means, equal the determination to climb to the top of the social ladder. Said like this, it would seem that a lively and versatile intelligence is the key—not only necessary, but also sufficient—for a young person to have a bright future. However, things are not like this.
