Abstract

This chapter provides a comprehensive analysis of global payment card systems, focusing on card schemes, payment processing, and the roles of card issuers, acquirers, and PSPs. It examines the mechanics of credit, debit, and prepaid cards, emphasizing their security features and widespread acceptance. The chapter discusses key technological advances, including EMV chip technology, contactless payments, tokenization, and the strategic influence of major card schemes such as Visa and MasterCard. It also explains regulatory compliance, card transactions, and clearing and settlement processes. The discussion also covers data protection standards, including PCI DSS, which protects payment data and ensures secure and efficient global payment transactions.
