Abstract

This chapter describes the complexities and controversies surrounding the Brent oil market in the 1980s. It focuses on key events, including the role of Khalil Gattas and his company, Gatoil, in a major default that exposed the fragility of the unregulated forward Brent market. The chapter explores how market manipulation, contractual defaults, and speculative trading strategies led to significant financial turmoil, implicating major oil traders and financial institutions. It further examines the legal and regulatory challenges that emerged, including the landmark Transnor lawsuit, which attempted to bring Brent trading under U.S. jurisdiction. Additionally, it highlights the illicit trading schemes at Kloeckner and the eventual intervention of Deutsche Bank to stabilise the market. The chapter provides a critical analysis of how industry players navigated the evolving landscape, ultimately shaping the modern Brent benchmark and influencing global oil trading practices.
