Abstract

This epilogue reflects on the fifty-year evolution of the modern oil trading industry, emphasising how market liberalisation, technological advancements, and geopolitical shifts shaped its development. It highlights the social construction of markets, underscoring the pivotal role of individuals, trust, and relationships in facilitating global oil flows. As the industry transitioned from chaotic trading floors to algorithm-driven platforms, oil traders adapted, balancing STEM expertise with emotional intelligence and logistical acumen. The narrative addresses the ethical challenges and regulatory responses that emerged alongside financialisaton, the decline of banks’ role, and the rise of independent traders. Despite persistent issues such as sanctions evasion and market manipulation, the epilogue argues that the broader social and economic benefits of oil trading—ensuring efficient resource distribution and price discovery—outweigh its darker aspects. It concludes with a call for policymakers to regulate underlying behaviours and values, rather than attempting to control prices, recognising the enduring significance of trust, transparency, and adaptability in a dynamic global market.
