Abstract

This chapter concerns with the resurgence of China’s influence in the global oil markets, particularly through its evolving trading strategies and structural reforms. It traces the rise of key players in Singapore’s oil brokerage industry, detailing how early pioneers like Shogun and PVM shaped the market. The narrative follows the expansion of China’s oil companies—Sinopec, CNPC, and CNOOC—and their transition from passive price-takers to dominant price-makers, ultimately redefining benchmark pricing in Asia. The chapter also examines the role of Singapore as a crucial trading hub, the emergence of paper markets, and the competitive dynamics between Western traders and their Chinese counterparts. Through historical accounts and industry insights, this chapter highlights the transformation of China’s oil trade from a controlled, state-driven system to a sophisticated, market-driven force with global implications.
