Collaboration, Technology, and Innovation in Faculty Development

This chapter examines the pivotal roles of collaboration, technology, and innovation in enhancing faculty development in Nigerian higher education, with a specific focus on Delta State University, Abraka. It examines how institutional and cross-sector partnerships enhance professional growth by facilitating knowledge exchange, resource sharing, and interdisciplinary research. The integration of technology, such as Learning Management Systems, virtual workshops, and online research tools, has enabled faculty members to overcome geographic and financial barriers to accessing development opportunities. Despite challenges such as digital divides and resource limitations, the technology significantly broadens access to global academic networks. It fosters continuous professional engagement, a key factor in the value of their ongoing efforts. Innovation is emphasized through peer-led development programs and internal research support systems that align faculty growth with local institutional needs, fostering a sense of achievement and inspiration. Using Adult Learning Theory and Social Exchange Theory, the chapter frames faculty members as adult learners and strategic actors who engage in professional development when institutional incentives align with personal and professional goals. Utilizing a qualitative case study methodology, the chapter applies interviews, focus group discussions, and document analysis to illustrate best practices and identify persistent constraints. The study concludes that sustainable and inclusive faculty development depends on coordinated institutional support, strategic partnerships, and a culture that embraces ongoing innovation.
