Abstract

This chapter introduces the reader to the notion of development finance in the context of economic development theories with a focus on post-World War II debate concerning financing and funding for capital formation, industrialization, social development, and modernization. Besides, in the context of the financial liberalization/ deregulation debate, the chapter also considers the notion of financial and institutional development and its relation to financing which is conducive to economic growth. The chapter notices the absence or underestimation of institutions in both debates especially when the latter are related to development banking.
