Abstract

Being able to communicate is key to immigrants’ assimilation in the host country labor market and society. This chapter reviews the importance of language in the economics of international migrations. Research in the area focuses on (1) the role of language as a determinant of locational choices of migrants, (2) language proficiency among migrants, and (3) the effects of immigrants’ linguistic skills and language acquisition on their labor market and socioeconomic outcomes.
