Abstract

Zusammenfassung Dieses Kapitel beleuchtet die Bedeutung von Übersetzungen im achtzehnten Jahrhundert. Dabei wird Zinzendorfs deutsche Übersetzung von John Laws ökonomischem Traktat Money and Trade (1705) analysiert. Die Übersetzung wurde 1758 unter dem Titel Gedanken vom Gelde gedruckt. Sie zeigt, wie Zinzendorf die Ideen von Law interpretierte und warum er der Meinung war, dass sie mehr als 50 Jahre später für deutsche Leser immer noch relevant sein würden. Zinzendorfs Buch beinhaltete eine Vielzahl von Fußnoten und folgte dem typischen Muster von Übersetzungen des achtzehnten Jahrhunderts. In Gedanken vom Gelde erläuterte Zinzendorf Laws Gedanken und ergänzte sie um aktuelle Ideen und Argumente von Montesquieu, von den französischen Schriftstellern des Gournay-Kreises und von den deutschen Debatten über Geldfragen und Währungsmanipulationen der frühen 1750er-Jahre.
