Commentary on ‘The Emergence and Growth of International Business Thought as an Evolutionary Process’: The Multiple Histories of the IB Field

Abstract

This commentary focuses on the earlier years of the IB field, from the mid-1950s through the 1980s, using an evolutionary lens drawn from sociology that sees variation, selection, and retention as complex multi-level social processes involving an array of activities and social actors. It challenges the dominant ‘origin story’ that locates the beginnings of IB in Stephen Hymer’s 1960 doctoral dissertation, portraying IB as having a more diverse and complex heritage, including a rich stream of work focused on management and strategy.
