Abstract

Employee mental health and, in particular, suicide risks have not traditionally fallen under the remit of managerial responsibilities. Increasingly, however, workplaces are expected to have appropriate processes and procedures in place to address such issues. In this chapter, the authors investigate the competencies required by managers to enable them to effectively address suicide risks that may arise in the workplace and review the effectiveness of training interventions to aid managers in developing these competencies. In addition, the authors discuss tools and strategies for colleagues of suicidal employees.
