Abstract

This chapter explores the intersection of cryptocurrencies with political and regulatory frameworks, highlighting various high-profile cases of corruption, fraud, and money laundering facilitated by digital assets. It examines how political figures and state actors leverage the pseudonymous and decentralized nature of cryptocurrencies to evade regulations, influence political outcomes, and commit financial crimes. The chapter discusses notable incidents involving prominent figures from Puerto Rico, and Argentina, emphasizing the challenges these cases present for regulatory agencies globally. It concludes by analyzing international efforts to implement anti-money laundering (AML) measures and regulate cryptocurrency use in political contexts.
