Abstract

As a completion of the narrative about the 1999 dam removal events in Maine, this concluding chapter reviews the recent developments of that State’s river restorations with respect to its wind and lithium-ion battery constructions for relieving its reliance on hydropower and fossil fuels. This includes the NECEC power source from Hydro-Quebec. It also reviews the motivations for our national dam deconstruction movement: indigenous justice, ecological restoration, safety concerns, and the demands for natural interactions for recreation. Following the procedures of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the US’ water project evaluation methodology has now evolved toward being a highly structured stakeholder collaborative process, and this evolution is also reviewed.
