Abstract

Rudiger Dornbusch was a master of the MIT style. In the 1970s, international macroeconomics had lagged behind major changes in both the real world—the rise of high capital mobility and the demise of fixed exchange rates—and economic analysis. Dornbusch revitalised the field with crisply focused simple, stylised models that combined rational expectations with Keynesian elements, above all his famous “overshooting” paper, and had an enormous impact on others’ research. He also played a pioneering role in bridging the roles of cutting-edge researcher and influential policy adviser to multiple governments. On top of all this, he was a beloved and influential teacher; many of his students went on to become key figures in both academic research and policy.
