Abstract

Per capire la natura del potere, produrre una tassonomia dei possibili tipi di uomini e donne potenti, stabilire se l’esercizio del potere è veramente inevitabile, filosofi e scienziati hanno scritto fiumi di parole e a volte hanno avviato dibattiti accesi. La comprensione resa possibile dal Teorema di Arrow ci permette di chiarire molte delle controversie passate. Tuttavia, questo teorema ha anche aperto molti nuovi e interessanti interrogativi. Questa circostanza non è né nuova né specifica del teorema di Arrow. In realtà questa è una delle caratteristiche più notevoli dei risultati scientifici più importanti: nel risolvere alcune questioni epocali, aprono invariabilmente orizzonti molto ampi. Orizzonti così vasti da poter dire, e questo può sembrare un paradosso, che grazie a questi risultati rivoluzionari il numero di problemi irrisolti è, alla fine, enormemente aumentato.
