Discovering Enocotourism in the Ribera del Duero Appellation: A New Concept Combining Wine Tourism and Ecotourism for a Unique Experience

The wine industry plays a significant role in contributing to the economy and has become a popular tourism attraction worldwide. The Ribera del Duero Appellation is a well-known wine region with a long history of wine production dating back to the Roman Empire. Nowadays, the concept of sustainable wine tourism has emerged, which aims to promote sustainable practices and minimize negative environmental impacts in the wine industry. This book chapter proposes the use of the term “enocotourism,” which combines wine tourism and ecotourism to provide visitors with a unique and authentic experience while minimizing the wine industry's environmental footprint. Furthermore, this study conducted statistical and content analysis to investigate the relationship between organic wines and wine tourism in Ribera del Duero. One of the findings is that 49 wineries produce both organic wines and offer wine tourism services, indicating a growing interest in offering tourism experiences related to wine and environmental sustainability. The wine industry in Ribera del Duero has implemented sustainable practices, such as organic viticulture, to reduce pesticide use and promote biodiversity. The use of renewable energy sources such as solar panels or wind turbines is a way to decrease their dependence on non-renewable energy sources. The promotion of natural beauty and cultural heritage from the Ribera del Duero Appellation is achieved through attractions that provide visitors with an authentic experience. One of the conclusions is that the wine industry in Ribera del Duero recognizes the importance of environmental sustainability in wine tourism development. By implementing sustainable practices, promoting ecotourism initiatives, and developing enocotourism, the industry aims to provide visitors with a unique and authentic experience while minimizing its environmental footprint.
