Abstract

Zusammenfassung Dieses Kapitel zeigt, wie die Geldtheorie, insbesondere das Konzept der vier Funktionen des Geldes (nämlich Tauschmittel, Rechnungseinheit, Wertaufbewahrungsmittel und Zahlungsaufschub), in das Konzept einer Hierarchie ineinandergreifender sozialer Institutionen und öffentlicher Güter integriert werden kann. Dieser Ansatz unterstreicht die Verbindung zwischen staatlicher Souveränität und der Geldwirtschaft. Darauf aufbauend wird argumentiert, dass die Einführung des Euro in erster Linie dazu diente, die dritte und vierte Funktion des Geldes (Wertaufbewahrungsmittel und Mittel für zeitversetzte Zahlungen) zu integrieren. Theorien über optimale Währungsräume (OCAs), die sich hauptsächlich auf die zweite Funktion des Geldes (Rechnungseinheit) konzentrieren und Fragen der Souveränität vernachlässigen, sind daher nicht in der Lage, die europäische Währungsintegration vollständig zu erklären.
