Abstract

Zusammenfassung Das Jahrzehnt der 1970er-Jahre begann schlecht für Kurt Gödel, wie wir gesehen haben (siehe Kap. 9 , Abschn. „ Der Anfang vom Ende “). Dawson (1997) nennt diese Zeit „der Rückzug“. Gödels psychiatrische Schwierigkeiten verschlimmerten sich allmählich in der zweiten Hälfte der 1960er-Jahre, und sie erreichten im Januar 1970 einen Krisenpunkt. Sein Freund Oskar Morgenstern fuhr ihn am 23. Januar 1970 ins Krankenhaus. Er zeigte Symptome von Herzproblemen sowie Diabetes. Er wurde jedoch nach nur vier Tagen entlassen und war ausnahmsweise nicht unzufrieden mit seinen Ärzten. Dennoch stellte Morgenstern einige Tage später fest, dass Gödel (selbst verschriebenes) Digitalis einnahm, anstatt das von seinem Arzt verschriebene Isordil, das zumindest zur Behandlung seiner Symptome wirksam schien. Kurz darauf verschlechterte sich Gödels Paranoia dramatisch, und er äußerte seine Überzeugung, dass seine Ärzte Lügner seien und die medizinische Literatur voller Fehler, zufälliger oder absichtlicher Art, sei.
