Abstract

Zusammenfassung Die Wurzeln der Relativitätstheorie reichen weit zurück – vielleicht bis zu Galileo Galilei im 17. Jahrhundert, vielleicht bis zu James Clerk Maxwell in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts, aber zumindest bis zu Ernst Mach in seinem Buch „Die Mechanik in ihrer Entwicklung“ (1883, ins Englische übersetzt als „The Science of Mechanics“), dessen Ideen in gewissem Maße von Bischof Berkeley (frühes 18. Jahrhundert) vorweggenommen wurden. Spätestens stammen sie aber aus dem Jahr 1895, als Albert Einstein 16 Jahre alt wurde und beschloss, München zu verlassen, wo er das Gymnasium abschließen sollte, nachdem seine Familie nach Mailand gezogen war. Einstein sagte später, dass er in diesem Alter begonnen habe, sich vorzustellen, wie es wäre, einem Lichtstrahl mit annähernd Lichtgeschwindigkeit hinterherzujagen oder eine Laterne zu halten, während man sich mit dieser Geschwindigkeit bewegt.
