Abstract

This chapter examines the formation of trust in levels of trade and joint venture partnerships between German companies and their Russian counterparts. The analysis illustrates a complex interplay of political, economic and historical constraints coupled with interpersonal interactions that were constantly in flux. In the end, the interactions over time between the German and Russian parties yielded a relatively high level of trust, which contributed to deeper cooperation and mitigated discord. As the previous chapter addressed the breakdown of trust between German and Russian partners after the annexation of Crimea and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, this chapter follows the development of trust up to 2014.
