Abstract

This chapter examines the effects of economic policy uncertainty on the employment dynamics within the context of price stability in South Africa. We find that positive economic policy uncertainty shocks significantly lower total non-agricultural and sector total employment. A counterfactual analysis reveals that the price stability and improved monetary policy credibility do not fully cushion the decline in employment growth from the negative effects of policy uncertainty shocks. Thus, policymakers should lower policy uncertainty to benefit employment growth.
