Abstract

Although the literature on entrepreneurial choice is extensive, little is known about its macroeconomic effects, especially in emerging countries. Thus, this chapter reveals the effect of characteristics at the individual, household, and city levels on the entrepreneurial decision (entrepreneur or self-employed), the effect of this decision on labor income, and, finally, the effects of such income on the GDP per capita in Colombian cities. Results indicated that individual, household, and city characteristics are key in entrepreneurial choice, which in turn is significant in the generation of income, which drives GDP per capita at the city level (for employers only).
