Abstract

The literature analyzing how firms expand across international markets is extensive; however, little is known about their relationship with institutional economics, specifically institutional barriers. This chapter seeks to unveil the relationship between firm exports and some institutional barriers (at the firm, city, and country level), showing that multilevel are key to analyzing this relationship. The results show that institutional barriers (at the firm, city, and country level) affect the international business (direct exports) of firms (specifically formal firms). Thus, some conclusions and theoretical and policy implications are drawn at the end of the chapter.
