Designing for Social Impact: Behavioral Science Field Studies to Improve Economic Mobility

Abstract

This chapter describes the creation and mission of MDRC’s Center for Applied Behavioral Science, established by MDRC in 2017 to systematically incorporate behavioral insights into programs and policies that impact individuals with low incomes. The author describes a collaborative, iterative approach to behavioral science research, and provides examples from field studies designed to improve the lives of individuals and families experiencing poverty. It describes the CABS approach to behavioral design, and the activities that the team undertakes to enhance a program staff's knowledge with tools and mindsets informed by behavioral science, which can generate new solutions to sticky problems.
