Abstract

This chapter describes the best practices used by the author for executing several multidiscipline complex technology development projects successfully, while he was working at Kongsberg Devotek at Kongsberg in Norway. The process has been cultivated and further developed at Kongsberg Devotek, which has been a part of the CoE (Centre of Excellence) for Systems EngineeringSystems engineering in Norway. The importance of early testing of unknown technological elements is stressed, and extensive use of digital tools, dynamic simulationDynamic simulation, animation,Animation and 3d printing3d printing is recommended. The processes used in qualification of new technologyQualification of new technology are touched upon. Use of A3A3 as a decision-making tool is discussed. The importance of risk management is discussed, and use of Risk RegisterRisk Register is introduced. A sample risk register is also presented in Appendix G—Risk Register. A fast track technology developmentFast track technology development process is presented graphically with CALCustomer Acceptance Level (CAL) and TRLTechnology Readiness Level (TRL) as the two axes. The importance of practice of LEANLEAN philosophy in technology development process and cycle of knowledge creationCycle of knowledge creation is discussed. Finally, some challenges associated with such processes are mentioned.
