The Quiet Optimism in the American Business Community

Abstract

Part VI, Chapters 21 through 24 , examines the theme of conducting “business in Cuba.” The interviews give a clear sense of what an attempt to enter the market in Cuba was during the Obama thaw and what it is like today. These conversations took place with American and Canadian business consultants, a president of a bipartisan non-profit organization, a U.S. attorney, and a Canadian company president. This chapter is an interview with representatives of the U.S. business community in November 2016, immediately following the election of Trump. These were shifting times. Nobody was certain if he would reverse the progress or follow a more pragmatic approach. During the Obama administration, history witnessed an overwhelming enthusiasm for the diplomatic thaw between the two nations, as evidenced by the number of major corporations signing contracts with Cuban partners. One can observe how that optimism lingered even after Trump’s election. Businesses continued to register their trademarks at the Cuban Office of Industrial Property. Corporate giants such as Google and General Electric pushed for signed agreements before he entered office. Was it all for naught? In hindsight, one would tend to agree.
