Abstract

A global view of the COVID-19 pandemic shows its massive impact on the hospitality industry. Its restrictive measures meant to curb the spread of the disease resulted in travel and mobility restrictions and the temporary closure of many hotels. The restrictive measures have had a significant impact on business and a decline in hotel occupancies and revenues. However, to sustain business activities, hotels in Zimbabwe were accommodating returning residents as quarantine accommodation for those who did not want to stay in those provided for free. This chapter focuses on the impact of COVID-19 on the hotel industry, focusing on hotels that were used as quarantine destinations. This chapter explores the extent to which accommodating returning residents impacted the revenue base of the hotels, what the perception of tourists was after the use of the facilities, and what the effects were on the employees working in these quarantine hotels. A qualitative descriptive study was utilised to explore the impact of COVID-19 on quarantine destinations. In-depth interviews were employed to obtain information from key informants. Data was analysed using thematic analysis. The findings showed that most participants were anxious and stressed due to the fear of contracting COVID-19. Management was also worried about staff retention. On a positive note, the quarantine destinations experienced some relief financially due to the revenue from the guests on quarantine. The hotel employees needed to be continuously provided with information as well as psychosocial support.
