Abstract

This chapter examines the impact of COVID-19 on Zambia’s tourism sector to propose practical solutions to consider when rebuilding the sector. Reflecting on data collected through interviews with policymakers and tourism industry business managers, in-depth analysis of government reports, and case studies, the authors demonstrate that the impacts of COVID-19 on tourism in Zambia have been both severe and varied. Every level of the value chain has been adversely affected, leading to the closure or downscaling of some company operations, especially in the small and medium enterprise (SME) categories. Challenges related to COVID-19 have consequently led to the laying-off of workers, loss of income, and government revenue. Based on the findings, the authors suggest that as key tourism stakeholders seek to reactivate tourism, coordination and collaboration should be considered a lynchpin in recovery strategies rather than competition and fragmentation at all levels of the tourism value chain.
