Abstract

In this chapter we outline the main features of the methodologies we employ to estimate individual and country compositions, show how the latter vary between countries, and how countries evolve over time. We start by explaining the archetypal analysis algorithm, including the important topic of choosing the number of archetypes, where we present a new method based on geometry which we believe is superior to previous approaches. We then discuss the E&WVS data available for our work on Welzel meta-values, which is necessary for understanding the strengths and limitations of subsequent analyses, but also shows why the technique of subsampling is needed to determine appropriate population estimates and confidence intervals for our results. Finally, we conclude with a short discussion of multidimensional scaling (MDS), the method we use to generate the culture map and country coordinates from the country compositions, and which enables us visualize country similarities, differences, and trends.
