Abstract

We describe the many and multiple challenges founders face when their businesses grow. The principal one is the need for founders to manage their own transitions, first to becoming effective business leaders and, then, eventually to transition again to become effective “owners.” Ownership is thus a journey, and for many, consists of repeated journeys. What we have observed is that the successful owners are fantastic learners. We illustrate these concepts with examples and through interviews with owners conducted during the writing of this book. The case and portrait descriptions also serve to further illustrate the diversity of ownership types and journeys referred to in the Introduction to this book.
