Abstract

In the previous chapter we saw that the Sturm-Liouville equation naturally arises when solving partial differential equations by the Fourier method of separation of variables. Applications of the Sturm-Liouville equation are not limited to the Fourier method. It is one of the most important mathematical equations. Up to now no formula for its general solution in a closed form is known, unlike the case of a linear differential equation of first order.
