Epilogue

Abstract

In this epilogue, I conclude that Shi’i political capitalism cannot be reduced either to state populism (Islamic socialism) or liberal capitalism (Islamic neoliberalism). This system is based on three fundamental institutions, namely Velayat faqih, Anfal, and destructive coordination (parallel institutions). The non-reformability of the Islamic political capitalism is closely related to its inner coherence; reforms do not remove the fundamental problems of the system regarding capital investment, economic growth, and increase in productivity. The improvement of dynamic economic efficiency requires an institutional revolution. Transformation rather than reform is warranted to enhance economic development, eschew ecological disasters in Iran by putting an end to Velayat faqih, Anfal, and destructive coordination.
