The Evolution to Patient Centricity

Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to provide a comprehensive theoretical framework of patient centricity, encompassing the main definitions. Rethinking the healthcare system with a patient-centric view implies the pursuit of a process composed of the phases of patient activation, empowerment, involvement, and engagement. The implementation of patient centricity requires a consistent and coordinated approach, in order to make the patients active participants in the decision-making process by identifying their needs and making information accessible. Managerial implications are proposed in the concluding part of the chapter.
