Abstract

Whereas the first chapter served as a prism that helped us to split a diffuse flow of notions of scale into three crisply defined streams, this last chapter brings the streams back together and focuses on their common core. We illuminate the three types of scale from several angles, based on concepts rooted in logic and mathematics – guided cut, logical field, mapping, morphism, and representation, all of them focusing on the central traits of the scale types. These views are shown to converge towards a general concept of scale. Thereby, the three main scale types can be recognized as branches originating in the same trunk, which can be explicitly outlined. Overall, scale proves to be fruitfully viewed as a process, rather than merely a static medium that is available for other processes to occur. The future of scale is addressed in light of its history as a living concept.
