Abstract

In this chapter, scale is captured while actively shaping not only our understanding of the environment but our environment itself. Symmetry types and their relation to scale are applied in art history: Classicism and Romanticism are distinguished with the help of scale and symmetry concepts. Scale symmetry is then shown at work in relation to individual artistic styles. Finally, aspects of scale in our understanding of nonlinear processes are discussed, including notions of chaos and self-organized criticality, along with practical implications of the part played by scale in each case.
