Abstract

This chapter is dedicated to one of the two aspects of scale as size presented in the book; it thus focuses on space (scale as size in time is addressed in Chap. 3). It introduces elements of the ground framework applied in the book, starting with the system image and its role in research. Significant characteristic aspects of relations between scale as size and spatial extension are discussed, including comparison, accuracy, distortion, orders of magnitude, and hierarchy. Scale change as a function of distance and position, in images and on maps, is related to the problem of perspective. Two main sub-types of scale as size are presented and exemplified. The debate on scale in human geography and in areas of the social sciences is reviewed and discussed.
