Modelling the Role of TV and Internet Coverage on Mitigating the Spread of Infectious Diseases

Abstract

Media-based public health knowledge is vital in curbing the spread of different infectious diseases. The information broadcasted through the internet and TV makes people aware of newly emerging infectious diseases and alters their actions towards awareness propagation. In this paper, we have constructed a non-linear mathematical model to investigate the impact of awareness through TV and the internet on controlling the spread of infectious diseases. The model assumes the spread of the disease through a contagious mode only. The model also assumes the susceptible class to form an aware class influenced by the media coverage in preventing the spread of the disease. The awareness coverage via TV and the internet is assumed to be dependent on the density of the infected individuals with a declining function of conscious individuals. The feasible equilibria and their stability of the system are discussed by analyzing the model. In the presence of media, the basic reproduction number is derived explicitly. The model shows a strong connection between disease transmission and media campaigning through the internet and TV. The analytical findings of the system are supported by numerical simulations.
