Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to explore the ramifications of the findings discussed in Chapters 4 – 6 . The consequences of Whiteness and stigma for both professional identity and identity work are considered in relation to the building blocks of identity, namely embodied practices, material and institutional arrangements, discursive formation and group and social relationships. Specific emphasis is placed on linguistic practices in reproducing Whiteness. Identity in the face of stigma and Whiteness is considered and three possible responses are discussed—mastering Whiteness, reframing Whiteness and challenging Whiteness.
