Abstract

Statistics are demystified for the aspiring data scientist. The purpose of this chapter is not to replace any statistics course, but to clarify and augment what we have found many students and professionals are lacking in the arena of statistical analysis. This chapter offers an introduction to many statistical concepts and spotlights our firm belief that a data scientist or analyst can never learn too much about statistics. Like most professions, data scientists should be constantly learning. One of the most essential toolsets of statistical analysis is “descriptive statistics”. Descriptive statistics attempt to summarize the data into a few concise but meaningful measurements. Fundamental univariate measures and visualizations are presented.
