On the Use of the Adjoint Technique to the Estimation of Neutron Source Distributions in the Context of Subcritical Nuclear Reactors

Abstract

Presented here is a more general description of the methodology that makes use of the adjoint technique to estimate the neutron source distribution required to drive a subcritical system to a prescribed distribution of power. This methodology is based on a relation between a linear functional with respect to the neutron angular flux and the importance function, also termed adjoint angular flux, which represents, in the context of this work, the contribution that one neutron inserted into the system has to the generation of power. The neutron transport equation and the equation which is adjoint to it are correlated through a reciprocity relation, leading to a relationship between the source of neutrons and the power produced by the system. An example is given to illustrate the application of the present methodology.
