Abstract

Jacob Viner is regarded as one of the leading economists of the twentieth century. He had an outstanding career as a scholar, teacher and public servant. Viner’s main fields of interest were international economics and the history of economic thought. These were combined with powerful effect, most notably in his greatest and most famous book, Studies in the Theory of International Trade (1937). But Viner was concerned with the whole field of economics and wrote also on price theory, macroeconomics, money and banking, public finance, economic development, and economic and financial history. Indeed, his intellectual interests embraced an even broader canvas that included philosophy, theology, literature, methodology, international relations, social science in general, and intellectual history generally. In this chapter, attention will be focused on Viner’s main fields of interest, his main contributions in these fields, and the various controversies in which he was involved.
