Abstract

Understanding economic discourse is the key to unraveling the complexity of any economic system. Put differently, words matter more than numbers, a realization that was a key component to the popularization of economics that has steadily unfolded over the last 40 years. This introduction highlights the rhetorical dimensions and discursive power of the “free market” espoused by the likes of longtime Federal Reserve chair, Alan Greenspan, one of the chief proponents of what came to be known as Reaganomics. It also offers a rationale for understanding economics as a form of communication and maps out the theoretical framework for this project.
