Managing Uncertainty Through Stage-Gate, Agile and Overspecification

Abstract

The majority of innovationinnovation projects fall short of their quality, speed and cost objectives. One important explanation for this observation is the relevant degree of complexity found in settings of innovation. The traditional linear Stage-GateStage-Gate models aim to mitigate ambiguity by rigorous preparation to prevent feature changes at the last minute. The essence of more modern Agileagile models is to adjust products iteratively to volatility, even during the final stages of development. In the middle, Overspecificationoverspecification aims to prevent uncertaintyuncertainty by adding additional features to prevent future adjustments. This research examines the impact of Agile and Stage-Gate models, together with Overspecification strategies, on the new productproduct developmentnew product development process from an uncertainty management viewpoint.
