Abstract

Based on data from the Scopus database spanning from 1990 to 2021, the present chapter aims to provide a summary of articles, research streams and the most significant publications addressing the role of productproduct and process innovationinnovation in a manufacturingmanufacturing context. Following a short survey of the most important studies on this subject, the current chapter discusses the main journals, the most relevant keywords and the primary research streams in this area of study by means of visualisation of similarities keyword analysis. The findings show that developing new products and improving production processes have a positive impact on firms’ competitiveness. However, the literature also shows that some drawbacks exist, requiring careful consideration by entrepreneurs about adopting or not adopting a specific type of innovation. A case of innovation in manufacturing firms is presented, highlighting the double nature of product and process innovation as well as the beneficial and harmful effects of adopting certain types of innovations.
