Abstract

Small and mid-sized quoted companies, often referred to as growth companies, represent a significant proportion of all listed companies across the UK and Europe. Despite this, relatively little attention has been devoted to the state of ESG adoption and the challenges of its implementation in this market segment. This chapter presents and discusses the results of a survey and interview study with over 100 growth companies listed primarily on the London Alternative Investment Market (AIM). It identifies four ESG adoption gaps (knowledge, accountability, leadership & execution and disclosure) that growth companies are grappling with and proposes ways in which company boards can meaningfully adopt ESG as part of their overarching purpose and business model.
