Abstract

In this chapter we describe the paradigm shift that is currently underway in the energy system away from passive distributed energy resources towards those that are more active and dynamic and are expected to play a larger role in enabling a secure and reliable zero-carbon electricity system. It highlights some of the technical and operational challenges that arise from transitioning away from a predominantly centralised, synchronous power system along with the new opportunities that arise from advanced inverter technology development. As the pace of change required by socio-political and environmental objectives may make the system more susceptible to operational vulnerabilities it is proposed that a comprehensive risk management framework accompany the DER policy transition, recognising the potentially ‘bumpy’ nature of electricity transition.
