Abstract

Due to energy security issues and environmental concerns, renewable energy sources are growing rapidly. Despite their many advantages, they can pose a challenge to power grids. Therefore, it is essential to examine the technical aspects of integrating these new resources within the existing electricity networks and develop appropriate rules and regulations. In the present study, we evaluated the major technical issues with the integration of renewable energy sources within power systems using DIgSILENT PowerFactory software. There are three subsections to explain the relevant concepts along with examples. Section 1 includes reliability and adequacy indices in the presence of renewable energy sources. This sub-section examines the importance of reliability in networks with the penetration of renewable energy sources. Section 2 involves the integration of renewable energy with an emphasis on short circuiting, island mode, contingency analysis, and energy storage systems. This sub-section examines how renewable sources affect the important indicators. Indicators include operation in island mode, network strength, short circuit, and operation in accordance with contingency analysis and in the presence of energy storage systems, renewable energy sources operate. Section 3 deals with harmonic indices in unbalanced and balanced modes in the presence of renewable energy sources. In this sub-section, a major aspect of power quality, namely, harmonic analysis, is examined in the light of the increasing importance of power quality in power systems, particularly distribution networks.
