Abstract

Natural fiber-based composites are gaining popularity owing to its renewability, recyclability, and environmental advantages over synthetic fiber composites. Furthermore, the environmental effect of plastics and synthetic fibers is extensive and enormous, since they may persist in the environment for hundreds of years and considerably contribute to global carbon emissions. Natural fibers like jute have the ability to substitute synthetic fibers in the production of environmentally friendly, compostable, and lightweight composites with better characteristics, high thermal and acoustic insulation, and a lower carbon footprint. Two-dimensional materials (2DMs), particularly graphene derivatives, have piqued the interest of scientists and engineers because to their remarkable physical and chemical characteristics and broad prospective applications in electrochemistry, photonics, bioengineering, electronics, and membrane separation. This chapter discusses sustainable composites made from the two-dimensional material graphene. This might pave the way for the development of next-generation smart, durable, and sustainable natural fiber composites for high-performance engineering applications without causing environmental issues.
