Abstract

The purpose of external radiation therapyRadiation therapy for cancer treatmentCancer treatment is to deliver a tumouricidal dose of high-energy photon beams to a patient’s tumour volume. At the same time, the dose delivered to healthy organs must be limited. In order to deliver the best possible treatment to an individual patient, it is of fundamental importance to evaluate the quality of a treatment plan in terms of these contradictory goals. In this chapter, we describe the current research in this area using the management science technique of data envelopment analysis (DEA)Data envelopment analysis. We describe the DEA model, the process of selecting inputs and outputs in the model (called feature selection), how to deal with uncertainty in dose calculation and finally the application of the model to inform the planning process and its use as an integrated part of this process.
