The “Nuclear Winter” Epic and My Subsequent Retirement

Abstract

Although my research concerning a “nuclear winter” was at most of secondary significance for the large work I had planned and begun writing at the turn of the 1960s into the 1970s, it was precisely my description of a nuclear winter which, originally of little interest to me, achieved general renown, thereby providing significant publicity for the kind of research towards which I was at that time re-orienting the Computing Centre of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Up till then the most interesting of the scientific results in the general area of the relationship of human beings to the biosphere, or concerning special features of the self-organization of the material world, had simply remained unnoticed, if not misunderstood. This situation is rather typical in science: far from everything the researcher regards as most important in what he or she has done is so regarded by others since the point of view of the researcher tends to be very different from that of his reader.
